The new OS6850 switch family addresses the needs of modern enterprise and triple-play
networking: flexible, stackable configuration; power over Ethernet, high availability, first-packet
wire-speed performance, and dramatically improved network response time. Similar to the
existing Alcatel OmniSwitch, the OS6850 series uses the Alcatel Operating System (AOS). This
ensures an easy and economical way to upgrade or deploy a new Ethernet network. The
flexible configuration options offered by the OS6850 family make them suitable for a
small/medium network in the core or at the edge of a large network. Also, the OS6850 is future
proof for networks with native support of IPv4 and IPv6 switching.
Today’s enterprise networks require Gigabit Ethernet switches that are feature-rich, reliable, and
capable of supporting converged applications at low cost of ownership. Alcatel has addressed these
needs with the OmniSwitch 6850 (OS6850) family of switches.
The family is a new line of fixed configuration L3 Gigabit Ethernet switches that provide:
• Triple-speed 10/100/1000 interfaces and 10Gig uplinks
• Choice of power over Ethernet and non power over Ethernet switches
• Stacking capability for virtual chassis redundancy
• Power supply choice (AC, DC, power over Ethernet) for flexible deployment
• IPv4 and IPv6 layer-2 and layer-3 switching for future-proof investment
• Advanced quality of service (QoS) to support mission-critical and triple-play applications
• Extensive security features for access control, policy enforcement and attack
containment enabling fully secure networks
• Alcatel Operating Software (AOS) and OmniVista Network Management System
(NMS) support for easier operations
The target applications for these versatile LAN switches are:
• Enterprise workgroups for edge deployments / LAN wiring closets
• L3 aggregation / distribution layer switches in three-tier networks
• Small enterprise core switching
• Ethernet access and aggregation for residential / metro triple-play applications

Alcatel OmniSwitch 6850 Family
There are currently 8 different chassis in the OmniSwitch 6850 series. All are stackable, fixed
configuration chassis in a 1U form factor, which can be optionally equipped with pluggable SFP and
XFP (depending on the model) transceivers that can support short, long and very long distances. The
accompanying chart indicates the differences in the models.
